Answer to this Month's Home Page Question

Always dress for the possibility of immersion in cold water. If the water temperature plus the air temperature equals less than 120 there will be a severe risk of life threatening hypothermia in the case of immersion. North Texas lake temperatures are currently about 53 degrees, so when the air temperature is less than 67 degrees you should wear a wet suit and a paddling jacket or a dry suit with warm layers close to your skin. If the water plus air temperatures are greater than 120 you should still be appropriately prepared with warm layers of clothing that will keep you warm if you get wet and provide sufficient mobility for paddling. Wear a thin wicking layer of polyester or wool against your skin, then a polyester fleece layer for warmth and a top wind/water resistant layer for weather protection. Remember a hat and gloves. Always carry extra dry clothes in your dry bag. Don't wear cotton. Carefully assess the clothing you have and your skill level and don't go paddling when you are not prepared for the weather conditions.

What to Bring

For each of our trips and excursions you will receive a suggested gear list, but here are our general guidelines:

  • Check the weather and dress accordingly. Wear clothing that can get wet. Polyester will keep you warm even when it is wet and will dry quickly.
  • Please avoid cotton. It will stay wet and clammy. Even in warm weather you may be cold and uncomfortable.
  • Bring a fleece top and nylon or poly wind breaker Consider bringing some running or wind pants.
  • Bring a towel and dry clothes to change into before going home.
  • Wear water shoes or old tennis shoes. Sandals are not the best choice.
  • Bring sunscreen, a hat with a visor, sunglasses with a strap so you won't lose them in the water and lots of water to drink.
  • If you have any questions before class please do not hesitate to call us.

How to Get There

Brazos River – We meet at Tres Rios Campground on the Brazos River just East of the town of Glen Rose. From I-35 near Cleburne travel West on Hwy 67 to the blinking light at Hwy 141. Turn left at this intersection. There is a large Exxon Station. Then make another left at the large tree in the road. After crossing a small bridge you will see Tres Rios Campground on your right.
